Chapter 2
SAMUEL
Liam and I stripped off the last bits chaining us to our old lives as we changed into our wolf forms. We broke through the trees, running at full speed away from the prison and the guards that were sure to be after us by now. Little did they know, but they would only find a pile of orange prison jumpsuits abandoned in the field behind the prison.
As soon as we shifted and slipped into the woods, we were free. The forest here was dense and overgrown. The bumbling police would be forced to come after us on foot. The undergrowth here was so overgrown that not even ATVs could make it through. This would give us all the time we needed for my pack to get us new passports and arrange a way for us to escape out of the US.
To the outside world, Samuel Cain and Liam Stiles no longer existed. We were two ghosts who vanished into the fog of night, never to be found again. Once we made it to my pack’s hideout, we would be one step closer to beginning our new lives with our new identities.
On all fours, the two of us covered ground at a rapid pace, putting miles between us and the prison. Our destination was a drop point in the forest used by my pack. Even though I had not made contact with Hux, my cousin and pack alpha, he had to have heard about my escape and arranged for supplies to aid my getaway.
Deep in the woods, there was nothing but the crunch of leaves and the snapping of twigs beneath our paws. The scent of wet soil filled my nostrils. As a wolf, my senses were enhanced compared to my human senses, but after so many years in a concrete cell, deprived of all scents and sounds of the natural world, everything hit me like an explosion.
There was so much I wanted to do and feel. To hunt. To run. To howl. To mate. I was never going to take life for granted again. I let out a long howl, with Liam joining me in the chorus.
With a renewed surge of energy, I powered through the woods until we reached a swiftly bubbling stream. Liam ran behind me, nipping at my heels as we followed the flow of water to our destination.
It wasn’t long until we reached a bunch of boards nailed to a couple of trees, leading up to a rickety wooden structure. To the casual observer, it looked like an old abandoned deer hunting blind. It was not at all out of place out here in hunting country. That made it the perfect drop point hidden out in plain sight. I signaled to Liam that we had arrived, and we shifted back into human form.
“Ugh.” Liam groaned as he cracked his shoulders. “I always hate how it feels to unshift.”
I scoffed. “You should be thankful that you could shift at all after suppressing it for so many years.” Liam was my cellmate, and he had already been imprisoned for four years by the time I joined him.
He was in prison for life because he killed a man by ripping him apart with his bare claws. Not that I held that against him, though. He had a good reason for doing it. The scumbag he killed had kidnapped and tortured his little sister for ransom. From what Liam told me, the incident turned her from a bubbly, carefree girl to a hermit recluse.
Not that any of that mattered to the jury. All they saw was a vicious killer who shredded another human being alive with sharp weapons that were never recovered. None of the normal population understood the vengeance that ran through our wolf blood when it came to protecting our kin. It was a small wonder that he hadn’t gone insane already from being trapped in our tiny prison cell for so long.
Climbing up into the hunting blind, I spotted a pile of dead leaves in the corner. Brushing the debris aside, I found two duffle bags, just as I predicted. This was the secret location my pack used to keep a change of clothes and supplies for whenever we unexpectedly shifted back to human form. Deep in the woods, it was also the perfect place for us to make drops without leaving a trace back to our human identities.
I threw the bag of clothes to Liam and while he changed, I rummaged through the other bag. There were a couple of stacks of hundred-dollar bills, a burner phone, two handguns, a dart gun with tranquilizer darts, and a note with instructions from Hux. I turned on the burner phone and sent a quick message to the pack alerting them that I had gotten the supplies before turning it off.
“So, what’s the plan now?” Liam asked as he tossed the bag of clothes to me.
I tugged the sweater over my head and felt a bit more like myself already. Leave it to my cousin to pack a cashmere sweater and dry-clean only pants in a getaway bag.
“We’re heading over to Rick and Owen’s estate. It’s in the middle of hundreds of acres of woods they keep for hunting, and they have a security team patrolling the borders. We’ll have total privacy.” Since my pack only met in our wolf forms, there were no links between any of us in the human world. Nobody would suspect that we were hiding there.
Liam nodded. “That will bide us some time, but how will we get out of the country? I have my team ready in Monaco, but I have no way to reach them right now.”
Of course, Liam had a backup plan. He came from an oil tycoon family, the type that secretly had a hand in geopolitical events behind closed doors. Every billionaire worth his weight in salt had an emergency fund and home bases set up offshore. Once you reached a certain level of wealth, you never knew which powerful people you were going to eventually piss off.
I finished tying the laces on my hiking boots. “My pack is on top of it. We’ll have a way out of the country and new passports in about a week.” Once we were overseas and out of US jurisdiction, we would be free at last.
Liam clapped my shoulder. “We’re almost free. It’s so close, I can practically taste it.” He closed his eyes and took in a deep, long breath, licking his lips as if to taste something in the air. “Samuel, is that what I think it is?” His muscles tensed as if he was fighting a powerful urge. His pupils dilated with lust.
I breathed deeply and growled. It was enough to make me fall to my knees and shift. The heady scent came from afar, but it was strong enough to make my head spin. It was the heavenly musk of a woman. Not just any woman, our woman. Our mate. There was no other explanation, only the scent of a wolf’s mate could have such an effect. My cock twitched. It had been far too long since I had mated.
“She’s out there waiting for us.” Liam was wound up as tight as I was, ready to pounce and run to her.
The sound of a metal bar clanging against the pavement echoed in the woods.
“Shall we go catch us a woman?”
